Claudio Vandelli,Conductor
A conductor born in 1967, Claudio Vandelli studied piano, clarinet and orchestral conducting in his native Milan. A student of Anthony Pay for the clarinet, he took classes in conducting from Sergiu Celibidache and Carlo Maria Giulini, among others.
From age 20 on, Claudio Vandelli dedicated part of his time to the discovery of young talents and the training of professional orchestra musicians. From 1989 and for eight years, he was in charge of selecting musicians for the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra, an orchestra he was involved with as Assistant Conductor and later, as Guest Conductor. With this orchestra he did the first recording of Iannis Xenakis’ “Mosaics” and its first creation in Italy, at the Festival Roma-Europa.
In 1999, he put together the “UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra” and acted as Assistant to its Musical Director, James Levine, until 2007. During this time, the orchestra was often referred to in the press as the best orchestra in the world for the training of young professionals.
Claudio Vandelli worked alongside guest conductors of the Verbier Festival, including Jiri Belohlavek, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Mikhail Pletnev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Yuri Temirkanov.
He conducted the first international tour of the Verbier Chamber Orchestra in April 2005.
Invited by the “ Verbier Festival & Academy” in Switzerland, he performed at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence, at the “Bashmet” Festival in Minsk, at the “BeMus” in Belgrad, at the Festivals of Sochi and Yaroslavl in Russia, at the Ruhr European Classics Festival in Germany, and at the “Y4Y” Music Festival in Thailand.
As guest conductor, he has conducted in Belarus, Canada, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United-States.
He has worked with such soloists as Alena Baeva, Yuri Bashmet, Ksenia Bashmet, Gautier Capuçon, Gianluca Cascioli, Corey Cerovsek, Barbara Hendricks, Denis Matsuev, Alexander Melnikov, Alexei Ogrintchouk, Anna Samuil, and Isabelle van Keulen.
He is the permanent guest conductor of the State Symphonic Orchestra, “Novaya Rossiya” since 2004. With this orchestra, he has conducted such pieces as the First and the Fifth symphonies of Mahler and the Verdi Requiem in the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In October 2009, his interpretation of Strauss’ “Also Sppracht Zarathustra” was met once more with considerable success, and he recorded with Bashmet the Concerto for alto of Igor Raykhelson which was released in 2011.
In Switzerland where he resides and of which he is also a citizen, he conducts for the first time, in 2010, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra in two concerts, with the pianist Cyprien Katsaris, and with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra.
Since 2009, he also directs a stage production of “l’Histoire du Soldat” with Patrick Lapp, Jean-Charles Simon and soloists from the Orchestre de la Suisse romande (OSR) and from the Verbier Orchestra.
The Dies Irae of Verdi’s Requiem, conducted by Claudio Vandelli has been viewed and commented upon by nearly a million people on YouTube.
In 2010, Claudio Vandelli led a tour with Ana Netrebko and Erwin Schrott which traveled to Odessa, Kiev, Riga, Saint-Petersburg and Moscow, ending with a concert before President Medvedev in the Kremlin.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
